The PMI (Plus, Minus, Interesting) framework is a powerful tool for decision-making, especially when helping children process complex thoughts and emotions or unpacking a big decision, event, or upcoming holiday. It allows them to express everything on their mind, which is crucial for neurosparkly kids, who need extra space, time and support when they have something on their minds.
This framework can break down a potentially overwhelming situation into manageable parts, leading to a thoughtful decision and a plan that boosts confidence. Using this tool aids in decision-making and also empowers children by validating their thoughts and helping them navigate their emotions.
Here’s how you can use it:
1. Plus: List all the positive aspects, the things to look forward to, or the benefits of the decision or situation. This helps highlight the good points and sets a positive tone. I like to start here and if the conversations flows directly into negatives, that's okay, jot them down, and ask open questions eg: can you think of anything else you may be looking forward to?
2. Minus: Note down the negatives, the challenges, or the aspects that could be difficult. This ensures that potential issues are acknowledged and can be prepared for. Sometimes just hearing and validating and a reassuring word can be enough. Be aware not to try to solve things now or brush off a child’s worries.
